Dr. Mackay graduated in medicine and surgery from Bristol University Medical School. She then trained in General Medicine at Bristol, London and Queensland Australia.
Following this she then undertook specialist training in Rheumatology, at London, Dublin, the University of Oxford and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath.
She was a clinical lecturer at the University of Oxford and undertook research at the Welcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, supported by a fellowship from Arthritis Research UK. Her published work has appeared in major medical publications and she was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine by the University of Bath.
At present, she is a consultant physician in Rheumatology at Torbay Hospital and Newton Abbot hospital.
Dr Mackay remains active in research and is the co-chair of musculoskeletal research both nationally and regionally for the NIHR (National Institute for Health Services Research).
Dr Mackay is the co-developer of the rheumatology section of the Connect Plus App, an app that has been developed by specialists at Torbay Hospital. The Rheumatology section has been developed for all Rheumatology patients, whatever their condition, and is free to download from the App Store or Play Store.
She has a strong interest in medical education, has undertaken many educational roles, enjoys teaching and is currently an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians.

Dr Mackay undertakes private consultations at Mount Stuart Hospital, Torquay. Torbay Chiropractic Centre, Torquay and at the Private Consulting Rooms, Leatside Surgery, Totnes (see contact details and map).
Consultations are usually on either a Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning and occasionally for urgent problems, by request, on other days (including telephone or video consultations).
Dr Mackay specialises in all aspects of Rheumatology (including all forms of Rheumatism, painful joints, back pain, and osteoporosis).
She has a particular interest in early inflammatory arthritis (e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis), Gout, Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Giant Cell Arteritis (Temporal Arteritis), Osteoporosis and treatment with Biologic therapies.
